My love affair with Bearded Collies began more than 30 years ago, and what a journey it has been! These incredible dogs have filled my life with joy, laughter, and purpose, and they remain at the heart of everything I do.
Over the years, I’ve owned, shown, bred, and adored Beardies, dedicating myself to their promotion and preservation here in South Africa.
Through this passion, many Ashvale Beardies have gone on to achieve show champion titles, excel in a variety of disciplines, serve as therapy dogs, and even appear in print and television campaigns.
But beyond the ribbons and accolades, what truly matters to me is the happiness they bring as cherished companions and family members. To share your life with a Beardie is to share it with a soul full of humour, love, and boundless spirit.
Preserving the integrity of the breed has always been my top priority. Over the years, I’ve imported dogs to strengthen and broaden the gene pool, ensuring the long-term health and diversity of the Bearded Collie — a responsibility I take very seriously as a breeder. Every litter is thoughtfully planned, and each puppy is carefully matched to the right home, where both owner and Beardie can thrive together.
More recently, another delightful breed has found its way into my heart – the Havanese. Their joyful nature, intelligence, and affectionate temperament reminded me so much of what I cherish in the Bearded Collie, yet with their own unique flair and personality.
What began as curiosity quickly grew into admiration, and soon, the Havanese became a cherished part of the Ashvale and Shaggy Chic family. These little dogs are full of character — playful, loving, and always ready to brighten your day. They’ve brought a wonderful new energy to our home, and it’s a privilege to share life (and often the sofa!) with them.
As with my Beardies, every Havanese puppy is raised with care, love, and attention, ensuring they grow into confident, well-socialised companions ready to bring joy to their new families.
Home for me, and the dogs, is Shaggy Chic in Kyalami, Midrand, Gauteng (www.shaggychic.co.za). It’s a place filled with wagging tails, muddy paws, and endless affection. The Beardies, and more recently our Havanese, welcome every visitor with their signature enthusiasm and unmistakable joie de vivre!
