WHAT IS A BEARDED COLLIE?

The Bearded Collie is a medium-sized Scottish herding dog characterised by its long, shaggy coat and an exuberant, intelligent personality.

Nowadays, most Beardies are pets, but they are still used for herding in Britain and Europe, as their working style is
particularly suited to cattle and hill sheep.

Beardies can be found in four colours (slate, blue, brown and fawn), with or without white markings.
All colours fade as the dog matures and then returns to a darker shade at around 3 years of age.
Underneath the double coat, a Beardie has a well-angulated, natural body shape and moderate bone.
The outer coat has a somewhat harsh texture, whilst the dense undercoat is soft, and this would protect him
from the elements if he were working all day.

Beardie Temperament

The Bearded Collie is a bright, responsive, and energetic breed that appeals to owners who enjoy an intelligent and active companion. Confident, agile, and full of character, Beardies are quick to learn but can become easily bored if not mentally and physically stimulated. They thrive on human companionship and may develop undesirable behaviours if left alone for extended periods. They are also known to be vocal and expressive dogs.

Bearded Collies are generally affectionate and sociable, getting along well with children and other animals. However, as a herding breed, they may display natural chasing or nipping tendencies, particularly when excited. Interactions with very young children should therefore be supervised. Their long coat can also attract unwanted pulling from small hands, which should be discouraged for the dog’s comfort.

Highly trainable and versatile, the Bearded Collie excels in a variety of disciplines, including agility, herding, obedience, and rally. They are sensitive to human tone and emotion and do not respond well to harsh or inconsistent training methods.

A firm, confident, and kind approach, combined with reward-based training and clear communication, will bring out the best in this intelligent breed. While eager to please, Beardies are also independent thinkers and may not always be entirely predictable, so a sense of humour and patience are valuable traits in any Bearded Collie owner.

Is a Bearded Collie the Right Breed for You?

That said, this breed is not suited to everyone. Prospective owners are encouraged to carefully consider the following before bringing a Bearded Collie into their home:

Am I prepared to have muddy pawprints through my home from time to time?
Beardies love the outdoors and are happiest when part of daily family life, both inside and outside the house.

Do I want a dog that is truly a member of the family?
The Bearded Collie thrives on companionship and should be included in everyday activities as a valued household member.

Am I willing to commit to training and regular exercise?
This intelligent, energetic breed requires early socialisation, basic obedience training, and consistent physical and mental stimulation to stay balanced and content.

Am I prepared for ongoing grooming and coat care?
The Bearded Collie is not a low-maintenance breed.
Expect to dedicate at least an hour each week to thorough grooming, or around ten minutes a day for tidying. The coat continually changes in both colour and texture until around three years of age, requiring patience and commitment to keep it free of mats. Shaving the coat to the skin is discouraged, as it provides essential insulation against both heat and cold.

Are Beardies Hypallergenic?
No breed is truly “hypoallergenic” because all dogs produce allergens in their saliva and urine. That being said, because they shed less than many breeds, they are less likely to trigger allergies in some people. It is recommended that you spend time with the breed before bringing a puppy into your home to determine sensitivities.
